By: Graham Kennelly – College Pro Entrepreneur in Calgary, Alberta
I graduated high school in 2008, the year of the worst economic downturn in history. Post-secondary education seemed like the only way to secure a future career, in order to achieve the financial goals that I’ve always dreamed about. I had no idea what I wanted to study, but decided to jump right in like the rest of my friends.
In January 2009, I joined College Pro Painters. I really had no idea what I was getting myself into – new work, new people and a new opportunity. What I had anticipated College Pro Painters to be was nothing compared to the high impact, valued training in running an actual company – my own company. It was over the next 6 months that a switch flipped in my head.
We all had the ability to shape our own futures.
I can proudly say that I ran a profitable business that provided six other individuals with jobs and allowed me to pay off my full first year of tuition and not have to work until the following summer. This was the highest monetary success I’ve achieved in my 19 years. As I continued with College Pro Painters, my mind began to mature and grow in ways that were hard to completely understand. I’ll be completely honest – the money was great but the skills I learned are invaluable. This, I realized, was the key to exceeding the status quo, especially when times are tough – no one is taking the risk to act outside of the box. The ability to think top down rather than bottom up is how I would describe my mentality, now at the age of 22.
Running a College Pro Painters franchise allowed me to develop skills in financials, marketing, production, most importantly, employee hiring and management. I am so much more aware of the importance of the people you surround yourself with. Leading employees is so much harder than it sounds. Imagine training and managing six painters on three job sites, plus someone to help with marketing, while maintaining customer communication, and making time to watch the game! Being the captain of the team, and learning how to help others reach their (monetary) goals is a feeling only a select few will enjoy. Having the training, mentors and resources to create, shape and execute your life goals is what I’m using to blaze my own trail, regardless of what shape the economy is in. See you on top.
